Our lawyers have significant experience in the representation of a number of foreign States and Embassies carrying on missions in Canada. For years, we have assisted foreign States in official diplomatic communications with Canada on a wide range of sensitive diplomatic relationship issues.
At all levels of court in Ontario, our lawyers have advanced precedent-setting, complex state and diplomatic immunity defences on behalf of States, their Embassies, and their diplomatic representatives and employees. We regularly provide advice to these clients on the scope and limitations of State and diplomatic immunity available to them as they carry out their missions in Canada.
Our lawyers also have experience in the protection and repatriation of foreign State property on Canadian soil. This experience includes involvement in a precedent-setting case that addressed the status of an Embassy’s diplomatic bank accounts and the question of their inviolability. Another recent example of our engagement with foreign States in the property sphere involved the successful repatriation of a multi-million dollar state property situated in Canada that had been purchased through corrupt funds.
